Keep the code’s square pattern intact
QR readers look for a specific pattern of square modules and corner markers. Avoid stretching the image, rounding or reshaping the modules, covering the corner markers, or placing decoration over the code itself.
Leave clear space around it
Keep an empty border on every side so the camera can distinguish the code from nearby text and artwork. GS1’s retail 2D barcode guidance describes a QR Code quiet zone of four module widths. Don’t put a frame, text, or other visual noise inside that clear space.
Choose strong, simple contrast
A dark code on a light, plain background is a dependable starting point. Pale colours, busy pictures, glare, and low contrast can make scanning harder. If the QR code is for a retail product or checkout, follow the applicable GS1 and barcode verification requirements; this general guide is not a compliance check.
Use a logo carefully
A logo can hide code details if it is too large or placed over important marks. Keep it modest, leave the three corner markers uncovered, and scan the final image after adding it. If a phone struggles, remove the logo and try again.
Keep the destination useful and concise
Include only what a visitor needs. A short destination address or clear message is easier to review than unnecessary tracking text. For Wi‑Fi codes, check the network name and security choice, and remember that anyone who can scan the code may see the connection details.
Test the exported and printed version
Scan the downloaded file with a phone camera before sharing it. If it will be printed, test a sample at the intended size, in the actual lighting and on the material you plan to use. There is no single print size that works for every camera, distance, and surface.
If a scan fails
Try a lighter background, darker code colour, more clear space, a larger export, shorter content, or no logo. Check the image again on more than one phone before printing a batch.
